Blue-shifted deep ocean currents in the equatorial Indian Ocean

چکیده
Spectra from two decades of zonal current data at $$\sim $$ 4000 m in the central and western equatorial Indian Ocean show a shift dominant frequencies west to east. The 120–180-day period is stronger 77 $$^\circ E, 60–120-day 83 30–90-day 93 E. weakening lower near eastern boundary can be explained using theoretical ray paths Kelvin waves reflected Rossby waves. wave forced by winds reflects as with different meridional modes. After reflection, low (high) frequency beams travel larger (shorter) distance before reaching bottom, thereby creating shadow zone, region energy, between path boundary. longitude not evident top 1000 m, where dominated semi-annual cycle.

Ocean Currents Modeling along the Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean
The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...
متن کاملOn the dynamics of equatorial currents, with application to the Indian Ocean
The dynamics of equatorial currents are considered in the light of the wind and current measurements at Gan (0.5 S, 73E) reported by KNOX (Deep-Sea Research, 23, 211 221, 1976). For westerly and meridional winds the response of equatorial currents is predominantly local and rapid. It follows that the current reversals observed at Gan are most likely due to changes in the local winds and not to ...
متن کاملIntraseasonal ‘‘monsoon jets’’ in the equatorial Indian Ocean
[1] The zonal wind in the equatorial Indian Ocean (EqIO) is westerly almost throughout the year. It has a strong semiannual cycle and drives the spring and fall Wyrtki jets. In addition, high resolution daily satellite winds show ‘‘westerly wind bursts’’ lasting 10–40 days, associated with atmospheric convection in the eastern EqIO. These bursts have the potential to produce intraseasonal eastw...
متن کاملA biweekly mode in the equatorial Indian Ocean
The National Institute of Oceanography, Goa deployed moorings with several subsurface current meters at 0◦, 93◦E (in February 2000) and 0◦, 83◦E (in December 2000) in the eastern Indian Ocean. Observed meridional current at all depths has a 10-20 day (or biweekly) variability that is distinct from longer period (20-60 day) subseasonal variability. Lags between different instruments suggest the ...
متن کاملWind-Driven Cross-Equatorial Flow in the Indian Ocean
Meridional velocity, mass, and heat transport in the equatorial oceans are difficult to estimate because of the nonapplicability of the geostrophic balance. For this purpose a steady-state model is utilized in the equatorial Indian Ocean using NCEP wind stress and temperature and salinity data from the World Ocean Atlas 2005 (WOA05) and Argo. The results show a Somali Current flowing to the sou...
